WorkerCompAttorney.com’s Attorney Thomas P. Delmar recently secured a favorable decision at the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) for our client Joel Nixon, a legally blind barber. The MCAD awarded Mr. Nixon $100,000 in damages for lost wages and emotional distress due to Mr. Nixon’s former employer, Tony’s Barbershop, illegally terminating him on the basis of his disability.
Mr. Nixon suffers from an eye disease which severely limits his peripheral vision. However, this does not prevent him from being a safe and skillful barber. The court ruled in favor of Mr. Nixon — “the blind barber” — and he was subsequently awarded $100,000. The case was reported on the front page of the Boston Herald, discussed on the Meredith Vieira Show, featured on NBC Channel 10 News, and reported on by news outlets throughout the country.
